Today, we introduce another of the workshop\u2019s speakers, Antonio Machado, who will be talking about \u201cNature conservation: nature at stake\u201d.<\/p>\n

Antonio Machado (Madrid, 1953) was a lec\u00adturer in Ecology at the University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Canary Islands), superin\u00adtendent of Teide National Park, adviser on environmen\u00adtal policies for the Presidency of the Spanish Govern\u00adment, regional councillor of the IUCN (Inter\u00ad\u00adnational Union for Conservation of Na\u00adture) and presi\u00addent of the Euro\u00adpean Centre for Nature Conserva\u00adtion (ECNC).<\/p>\n

He has also worked as an inde\u00adpendent consultant for sever\u00adal inter\u00adnational organiza\u00adtions and foreign cooperation programmes. Between 2008 and 2018, he headed a public foun\u00adda\u00adtion in the Canary Islands (Granadilla Environ\u00admental Obser\u00ad\u00adva\u00adtory), and he was also editor-in-chief of the\u00a0Journal for Natu\u00adre Conser\u00advation (2001-2021).<\/p>\n

Currently, he continues privately with entomological research (started in 1975) and is a full member of the\u00a0World Aca\u00addemy of Arts and Science\u00a0and of the Canarian Academy of Language.<\/p>\n

In addition to a large number of technical and scientific writings (mostly Entomology), he has also written more general books like Eco\u00adlog\u00eda, medio ambiente y desa\u00adrrollo tur\u00edstico en Canarias (1990), T. Vernon Wollaston (1822-1878). Un entom\u00f3\u00adlogo en la Macaro\u00adnesia\u00a0(2006), The Psycho\u00adsphere. Do we need a new Ecology? (2006) or 28-D Enclave de humor\u00a0(2012), the latter with filmmaker Santiago R\u00edos. His last book (2022) is scientific: The Macaronesian Laparocerus. Taxonomy, Phylogeny, and Natural history.<\/p>\n
