Last June, the LIFE BEETLES project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, in collaboration with the Azores Biodiversity Group, promoted a night butterfly observation activity.

The initiative aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of insects and arthropods in our lives, as well as the diversity that can be found in everyday places, in this case, at a viewpoint known to the local population.

During the activity, in addition to moths, several other species of arthropods were observed, including spiders (8 species), beetles (2 species), woodlouse, ants, butterfly caterpillars, among others. Various arthropod observation techniques were also demonstrated, allowing participants to learn how to identify some of the most common species.

The activity lasted longer than planned, reflecting the enthusiasm of the participants, and became an opportunity for sharing knowledge and experiences. Ultimately, everyone involved became more aware of the richness of local biodiversity and the importance of conserving insect species in the Azores.
