The Natura 2000 Network is a European ecological network composed by Special Conservation Areas of Conservation (SACs), based on Habitats Directive, and by the Special Protection Areas(SPAs), based on the Birds Directive.
This network is a way of preserving the EU’s biodiversity, protecting ecosystems, habitats and wild species that are threatened or that are characteristic of certain regions, considering the economic, social and cultural requirements of the different regions
.

In the Azores 24 Special Areas of Conservation, 15 Special Protection Areas and 2 Community Importance Site are classified.
