One of the key tasks of the LIFE BEETLES project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, is to monitor its actions in the field to follow the progress of the work and adapt methodologies whenever necessary. When endemic species are planted, they are observed, and their phytosanitary status and growth are assessed.
During the most recent visit to the plantations on Terceira island, the plants grew an average of 12 cm, with some doubling in size since the last assessment. So far, the mortality rate has remained low, with a survival rate of over 85 %. This latest monitoring has thus revealed very positive results, indicating that the intervention area is well on its way to being converted into a more favourable habitat for the project’s target species: the Ground Beetle.
